If His Eye Is On the Sparrow..!

She was over ninety years, yet prim and proper, and still as lovely as I remembered her during my years in school, she sat at her dining table, waiting for us, her students of a half a century back, to come and join her for tea. "Bob," she said, after awhile, "I do remember, you singing a song for me, when you were twelve years old, and I had fallen sick. I remember you children had come home and you sang,.."
"Somewhere over the Rainbow!" I whispered as the others giggled.
"Yes," said my class teacher of yore, "I do remember you singing it, can you do so once more?"
I thought for a moment, and realized the boy soprano, who had sung that song for his teacher had a baritone voice now, and try as I might, I would not have been able to take those high notes, "May I sing another song for you Miss?" I asked and the others smiled as I addressed her as we all addressed our teachers in the days of old.
"What would you like to sing for me Bob?"
"A song that is close to my heart!" I said, "And one I would like to leave with you, as we go our ways in a few minutes!" And I sang. I know, my voice trembled a bit, because one is still in awe of one's teachers even if they be ninety and over, but I sang, and this is what I sang:
Why should I feel discouraged? Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home,
when Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is he:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free,
for his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
Let not your heart be troubled, His tender word I hear,
and resting on his goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
though by the path he leadeth, but one step I may see:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me. She, all of ninety years and more, sat still as we left that day. But I felt in her a sense of peace, a peace which came from the knowledge, especially at this time when we live in dreaded fear of the virus at our doorstep, that if God's eye is on even the little sparrow, then He's there in all his power and protectiveness to look after you and me.
So sing because you're happy, sing because you're free, for if His eye is on the sparrow, I know, and you know, He watches over you and me..!
