NEW DELHI, Mar 24: The Election Commission on Tuesday deferred the Rajya Sabha biennial elections slated on Wednesday for 18 seats in seven states, including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Rajasthan, on account of coronavirus, saying fresh dates will be announced later but the nominations filed earlier will only be valid.
These elections are to fill the vacancies falling on April 9 and hence they may be held before that date if the situation improves, EC sources said.
Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh is among whose fate is to be decided in these elections. Already 37 candidates from 10 states have been already declared elected unopposed and they include NCP supremo Sharad Pawar.
