2 militants killed in Kulgam encounter: Police

SRINAGAR, May 30: Two militants were killed in a gunfight with government forces at Wanpora village of Kulgam district today, police said.
Reports said a joint team of police, army and CRPF launched a search operation at Wanpora village of Kulgam district after the security agencies were tipped-off about the presence of militants in the area.
As the joint team of forces was approaching the spot, where militants were hiding, it came under a heavy volley of fire from their side, which was retaliated by the forces triggering an encounter between the sides. Two militants were killed.
In his statement a police spokesman said a specific input was received by Kulgam police last night about the presence of militants hiding in village Wanpora Khudwani area of District Kulgam.
He said, “Acting upon this input a joint search operation was launched by Kulgam Police, 1RR, and CRPF.”
The statement further said as search parties drew closer to the suspected house, hiding militants fired indiscriminately upon the search party. The fire was effectively retaliated in which two unidentified militants were neutralised.
“Incriminating material including arms and ammunition has been recovered from the site of encounter”, police statement said.
People were requested by police not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive material. Although bomb disposal squads of Kulgam Police have cleared the area of all stray explosives, people are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared, police said.
