Launch of Indian Corona vaccine for public by Aug 15

NEW DELHI, Jul 3: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Friday announced to launch the first indigenous Covid-19 vaccine, called COVAXIN, for public use by August 15, after completion of the clinical trials that begin next Tuesday after enrolling the subjects in different age groups.
Its scientists said the ICMR has partnered with Bharat Biotech International Limited to develop this path breaking Covid-19 vaccine. They pointed out that the treatments prescribed by the ICMR have been effective in the recovery of as many as 60.72% of the total persons infected in the country.
This is the first indigenous vaccine being developed in India as one of the top priority projects of the government. The vaccine is derived from a SARS-COV2 strain isolated by the ICMR's National Institute of Virology, Pune and Bharat Biotech International, Hyderabad. Both are jointly working for the pre-clinical as well as clinical development of this vaccine.
Recently, the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation, the national regulatory body for Indian Pharmaceuticals and medical devices, has granted approval to Bharat Biotech International, founded back in 1996, to conduct human clinical trials for this Corona vaccine.
A record number of 20,903 persons were found infected with the Covid-19 virus in a day on Friday even as 2,41,576 persons underwent testing to raise the total persons checked so far to 92.98 lakh.
So far, 6.26 lakh persons have been tested with the positive symptoms, while 2.27 lakh of them are still under treatment in the hospitals across the country while 3,79,892 have been cured and discharged from the hospitals, over 20,000 in the past 24 hours. The lowest 432 were hospitalised since Thursday.
The death toll in the country rose to 18,213, with as many as 479 succumbing to the dreaded disease in the past 24 hours.
