ISJK commander, CRPF man killed in overnight encounter in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, July 3: A top commander of Islamic State of Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK) outfit and a paramilitary CRPF personnel were killed during an overnight encounter at Malabagh area in Srinagar, officials said today.
Officials said the slain militant who was killed in a brief encounter with government forces on the outskirts of Srinagar was involved in killing of a six years old boy and two security forces personnel including a policeman and a CRPF Jawan in Bijbehara Anantnag in south Kashmir.
He was identified as Zahid Daas, who was heading ISJK militant outfit as its Commander in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. A Paramilitary CRPF Jawan was also critically injured in the encounter who was later shifted to 92 Base Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police in a tweet also confirmed that ISJK Commander, Zahid Daas who was involved in killing of a six years old boy, a policemen and a CRPF personnel in Bijbehara Anantnag was killed in an encounter at Malabagh Srinagar.
“#Killer of JKP and CRPF personnel at #Bijbehara #Anantnag and one 6 years old baby, #terrorist Zahid Daas killed in yesterday's encounter at #Srinagar. Big success for JKP & CRPF,” police said in a tweet.
The slain CRPF personnel has been identified as HC/GD Kuldeep Oran of 118 Battalion CRPF. The encounter raged in Srinagar a day after a civilian and a CRPF Jawan were killed during a shootout at Model Town Sopore in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
Officials said the encounter raged after a joint team of JK Police, Army and CRPF launched a search operation in the area following tipoff about the presence of militants. Militants however fired indiscriminately on forces after they zeroed in the suspected spot triggering off an encounter.
Heavy firing was reported from both sides in which a militant whose body was lying near the encounter site and a CRPF personnel were killed in the encounter.
As soon as the firing stopped, a joint team of government forces launched a door to door search to ascertain whether there is any militant hiding in the area.
This was the third encounter in Srinagar since May this year. A top Hizbul Mujahideen Commander and son of a senior separatist leader, Junaid Ashraf Sehrai was among the two militants killed in an encounter at Nawakadal area in Srinagar on May 19 this year.
Three local militants were also killed by security forces in the Zadibal area of Srinagar, the second in just over a month in the city on June 21 last month.
