Release Qazi Shibli, end harassment of Kashmiri journalists: CPJ

SRINAGAR, Aug 3: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called on the Jammu and Kashmir police to immediately release Qazi Shibli the editor of the online news website The Kashmiriyat from custody.
Taking to their Twitter handle, the journalist body said, “@JmuKmrPolicemust immediately release @QaziShibli, the editor of @TheKashmiriyat, who was detained last evening by the Cyber Crime Cell in Srinagar.”
In a statement issued CPJ’s Asia program coordinator in Washington D.C, Steven Butler said “Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir must immediately release Qazi Shibli and allow him to return home,” “Indian authorities must end their harassment of journalists and allow them to do their jobs without interference.”
The South Kashmir-based editor and journalist was detained by Jammu and Kashmir police in Srinagar’s Shergari police station on Friday afternoon.
In a statement, TheKashmiriyat, Where Shibli works, said that he “got a call from the Cyber Police station at around 2:15 PM on Thursday asking him to present himself” in the Cyber Police Station in Srinagar today.
However, it was not immediately clear if he has been charged under any offense.
Shibli was detained under the draconian Public Safety Act for nine months in Bareilly Jail of Uttar Pradesh, Central India, after he had tweeted information about the deployment of additional troops in Jammu and Kashmir in the last week of July 2019. On 5 August 2019, the Government of India revoked J-K’s special status and clamped down in the Valley for several months.
