NEW DELHI, Aug 7: India's Covid-19 infection count crossed 2 million on Friday to touch 20,27,074 even as the highest 62,538 were detected with positive symptoms in a single day in the testing of 6.39 lakh samples in the past 24 hours.
Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi was the first to tweet in Hindi that "20 lakh crossed and missing is the government (20 lakh ka ankda par, gayab hai modi sarkar)."
The Health Ministry said less than one-third of those contracting the dreaded virus are in hospitals, though their number is the highest at 6.07 lakh because of the highest 11,883 hospitalised in a day.
The recovery rate further improved from the previous day's 67.62% to 67.98% as 49,769 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals across the country, raising the total number of patients cured to 13.78 lakh.
The death rate dipped on Friday by 0.02% to touch the lowest 2.05% even as 886 more persons succumbed to death in 24 hours, raising the death toll in India to 41,585.
India added one million cases in just three weeks as it turns out to be the third most-hit country and fifth in terms of the death toll. On July 27, Rahul Gandhi had tweeted the Covid cases crossing 10 lakh. He had then tweeted that "if Corona-19 spreads at this speed, it should cross 20 lakh by August 10." It turns out to be faster than Rahul's estimate. He had then urged the government to take concrete and planned steps to stop the disease in its tracks.
Topping the list in terms of the cases and deaths is the United States, with 50.32 lakh found infected and 1.63 dead which gives 492 deaths per million. Brazil remains second with 20.27 lakh cases and 98,688 deaths that gives deaths per million to 464 as against just 30 in India.
The WHO dashboard shows 1,92,59,406 corona cases registered worldwide with 7,17,687 deaths and recovery of 1,23,58,383.
