NEW DELHI, Aug 13: The Congress on Thursday mounted a campaign against the Bhartiya Janata Party for spreading hatred in the society, with hashtag of #StopHatePolitics, pointing out that total 30 hate crimes in India in five years before the Modi government came to power and they were all by the Bajrang Dal, 29 of these in 2014 alone.
It tweeted: "When the BJP and the so-called 'nationalist' media is failing the society, it is upon the citizens to resist hate. We Must join hands together in preserving our society's morals." It gave a call to 1. Stop supporting hate filled speeches, 2. Stop advertising on hateful TV channels, and 3. Stop debating with hate filled spokespersons.
Senior Congress spokesman Manish Tewari, MP, said: "Our spokesman Rajiv Tyagi's death from heart-attack on Wednesday should become the trigger for TV channels to revisit this debage format. These debates are no longer structured discussions. They only serve to generate TRPs for TV channels which translate into revenue streams."
In another tweet, the Congress asked: "When BJP parliamentarians are elected only for giving hate speeches, what can be expected from their spokespersons and friendly anchors who create a high stress environment everyday with their lies and hatred." It said BJP's only ideology is Hatred. It quoted a 2018 report that says 47% of MPs/MLAs with cases of hate speech are from BJP.
It said the entire society is today filled with hatred because of the poison of hate being spewed continuously by the BJP and the BJP-supported media. The only agenda of the BJP-backed media is to spread hate and polarisation which is dividing the country, amounting to an assault on the unity. This media specialises in spreading sensational news to create hatred and use the language that promotes further divide.
The Congress said the Indian Media is losing its credibility for the sake of TRP and selling own morality for the advertisers to ask the questions to the opposition that should be asked to the government. It regretted that those disagreeing with the BJP propaganda are taunted and questions are raised on their loyalty to the nation.
"What a truly nationalist media should have normalised: Holding the Govt accountable. What did they normalise: Hate, lynchings, name-calling, personal attacks, sensationalism," the Congress said in another tweet. It said the BJP-friendly media is indulging in sensationalising news, spreading hatred, promoting vile language and indulging in personal attacks and the consequence is: "A hate filled society."
Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak said the media is supposed to be the fourth pillar of democracy, but it is today indulging in spreading hatred and division in the name of religion and castes. She said it should be the responsibility of the TV anchors and political spokespersons to shut down such debates. Instead of the fact-based TV debates, they have become a forum of noise and personal attacks and such poisonous TV debates do not bring out the truth but only create sensation, said another spokesman JaiveerShergill.
In yet another tweet, it said: "What RSS' hatred did to Mahatma Gandhi, is what BJP is doing to Indian democracy & society today. Hatred has been passed on from RSS to the BJP." It said: "If anti-national had a face, it is the RSS," pointing out that the RSS did not participate in Salt Satyagraha of Mahatma Gandhi, nor did it participate in the Quit India movement.
"The RSS draws its inspirations from the Nazis -- Is there anything more vile or dangerous," asked the Congress and in support it quoted from the speech of its foremost leader M S Golwalkar: "To keep up the purity of Race and its culture, Germany shocked the world by her purging of the Semitic Race -- the Jews. Race pride at its highest has been manifested here. Germany has also shown how well nigh impossible it is for Races and cultures, having differences going to the root, to be assimilated into one united whole, a good lesson for us in Hindustan to learn & profit by."
