65 BYPOLLS CLUBBED WITH BIHAR ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS

NEW DELHI, Sep 4: The Election Commission on Friday decided to conduct all the 65 by-elections, including one for the Lok Sabha and 64 in various state assemblies, around the same time when the Bihar Assembly elections are held.
It made it clear that the Bihar elections cannot be postponed since they are required to be completed before November 29 when the 5-year term of the present House ends.
The EC, however, did not indicate dates for holding the elections. It just said: "Announcement of schedule of Bihar General Assembly Elections as well as these bye-elections will be done by the Commission at appropriate time."
One of the major factors in clubbing the by-elections with the Bihar polls together is the relative ease of movement of CAPF/ other law and order forces, and related logistics issues, says a press release by the EC.
The EC had convened its meeting here on Friday to consider the by-elections due in various states. It reviewed the reports and inputs from Chief Secretaries/ Chief Electoral Officers of many of the concerned states seeking deferment of the bye-elections in their states in view of several factors including the extra-ordinary heavy rains in some places and other constraints like pandemic etc.
