SRINAGAR, Oct 17: A militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, the Army said.
Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Larnoo area of Anantnag district in south Kashmir this morning following inputs about the presence of militants there, an Army official said.
He said the search operation turned into a gunfight after the militants fired upon the search team, drawing retaliation.
In the exchange of fire, one militant was killed, the official said.
An AK rifle was recovered from the encounter site, the official added.
Local news agency CNS reported, the village is falls very close to the forest , after the brief firing , the militants took shelter in nearby forests and later one dead body of an unidentified militant was found in nearby forest.
After the search was over, operation was called off as other militants, believed to be two in number, managed to escape during the gunfight, the report said.
Meanwhile, Police claimed to have arrested a militant associate of Lashkar Toiba outfit in Pampore area of South Kashmir’s Awantipora.
In a statement, police said that government forces arrested a militant associate of Lashkar-e-Taiba involved in providing shelter, logistics and other support to the militant outfit as well as in transporting of arms/ammunition of the militants in Pampore, Khrew and Kakapora area.
Arrested militant associate has been identified as Haris Shareef Rather Resident of Zaffron Colony Pampore, the statement said.
Incriminating material has been recovered from him which has been seized for the record purpose, the statement adds.
A case under F.I.R number 84/2020 under relevant sections of Unlawful Activities Act has been registered in Police Station Pampore, it further added.
