Maharashtra still accounts for over 1/4th Covid deaths

NEW DELHI, Oct 22: With 180 deaths in the past 24 hours, Maharashtra on Thursday accounted for more than one-fourth of the total 702 Covid-19 deaths in the country, Karnataka coming second with 88 deaths, West Bengal 64, Delhi 47, Chhattisgarh 44 and Uttar Pradesh 41 deaths.
The death toll in the country has dipped to 1.51% of the 77.07 lakh persons found with the infection while the recovery improved to 89.20% with 68.75 lakh discharged from the hospitals. The case load on the hospitals is also down to 7.16 lakh, which 9.67% of the total infections.
India's death rate is 84 per million population which is quite low compared to many countries hit by the dreaded virus, but it is still more than the neighbouring countries like Pakistan reporting 30 deaths per million, Bangladesh 35 per million, Nepal 27 per million. And for that matter, China is claiming just 3 deaths per million.
As many as 55,839 persons were found infected with the positive symptoms in India in 24 hours, though it was comparatively low to 79,415 patients recovering and leaving the hospitals.
The number of tests carried out in 24 hours went up to 14,69,984 which is the second highest in the past four weeks, with the highest 14,92,609 tests ever done on September 26.
The WHO dashboard showed 11.36 lakh Covid-19 deaths and 4.15 crore total cases worldwide.
