MS says MRI yet to be sanctioned, no space for installation

ANANTNAG, OCT 25: When Government Medical College (GMC) started functioning in this southern district in 2018, people of the region had hoped end to the trouble they were facing while travelling to Srinagar to seek treatment for their ailments. However more than two years later the facility remains devoid of the facilities like MRI and ECHO again forcing the patients either to visit major Srinagar hospitals or private diaganostic centers.
Despite the government releasing over 70 crore rupees for upgrading infrastructure of the medical college since it was made operational two years ago, the facility continues to function with almost the same facilities it had at the time of being a district hospital under the control of health department.
"Due to the non-availability of MRI facility in the medical college patients are forced to go to SKIMS , SMHS or private diaganostic centers to get the test done. Most of the patients in order to avoid the trouble of covering long distance to Srinagar prefer to visit the lone MRI facility in the town where they are charged at will. Since the diaganostic center has no competition in the town, patients are charged much more than that of Srinagar MRI centers," said a doctor posted at GMC Anantnag.
Except the appointment of teaching faculty, the doctor said, nothing seems to have improved in the hospital.
The cardiology department which is run by a single doctor has no Echocardiogram facility badly telling upon the pockets of poor patients at private diaganostic centers.
"In private, patients are made to pay Rs 1500 to Rs 1700 for ECHO. It is a joke in the name of medical college when you even refer the patients to private centers for ECHO," said another doctor.
The endoscope and colonoscope in the hospital, a doctor said, go defunct frequently in the hospital causing severe inconvenience to the patients.
"Several months ago both the machines were defunct for months together. Authorities instead of purchasing new sophisticated equipments got them repaired at a huge amount. One wonders what the Medical College authorities spend the money for that was released in crores for raising infrastructure in the hospital. What is the fun of having a medical college when the referrals of patients don’t stop," said another doctor.
Medical Superintendent, GMC Anantnag, Dr Mohammad Iqbal said that they have released Rs 25 lakh to the medical corporation for echocardiogram against the required funds of Rs 50 lakhs.
"But JKMC is yet to complete the tendering process which has delayed the purchase of the machine," MS said.
He, however, said that MRI machine is yet to be sanctioned for the hospital.
"We would have pressed the authorities for sanction of MRI but the major problem is that we don’t have a space available for installation of the same. It was no big issue to get the MRI machine sanctioned but where to install it remains the question," Dr Iqbal said.
He said that the lack of space has affected the healthcare in the hospital.
