Apologise to farmers, Cong tells PM
KT NEWS SERVICE. Dated: 1/12/2021 1:52:49 PM
NEW DELHI, Jan 11: The Congress on Monday referred to the Supreme Court's strictures on the Government for mishandling the farmers' protest and urged the Prime Minister to immediately repeal the three farm laws and apologise to not only the families of 65 farmers who died during the protests at Delhi borders, but also to 62 crore "annadatas" (food-givers).
Its chief spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala told a Press conference here that the PM should, thereafter, come forward and speak to the farmers himself. He urged PM Modi "to shed the crony capitalists for whom he enacted these three black laws and stand with India's farmers to understand their anguish and suffering."
He said the Congress is opposed to the Supreme Court setting up a committee to sort out the fight between the government and the farmers. "In our democracy, the executive is supreme in terms of framing of laws and the High Courts and the Supreme Court are supreme in interpreting and looking at their validity."
"This is not a legal issue, not a legalistic issue at all. This is a fight for lives and livelihood. This is a fight for survival of 62 crore farmers. We respect the Supreme Court and its concern for welfare of the farmers, but ultimately repeal of the laws and the discretion to repeal them lies at the doorstep of the government and not the Supreme Court," he said.
