NEW DELHI, Jan 12: The central government may soon bring cheers to its staff and pensioners to restore the dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) respectively this month itself instead of the earlier decision on a freeze till July.
Top sources in the Finance Ministry said the government is contemplating to end the wait imposed in view of the Covid-19 pandemic in view of an improvement in the economic activities in the country.
It means the employees will get a hike of 28% in DA and DR with effect from January 1, 2021, in accordance with the accepted formula based on the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission. There are 48.34 lakh employees and 65.26 lakh pensioners who will benefit.
In March 2020, the Union Cabinet had cleared the additional instalment, but the payment was put on hold till June 2021, citing the heavy drag on the government finances due to the expenditures on the Coronavirus pandemic.
A decision announced on the New Year day to extend the disability compensation to all serving employees would go a long way and especially provide relief to those in the central armed police force like BSF, CISF, CRPF, etc. It applies to all serving government employees who get disabled while performing duties and are still retained in service.
