SRINAGAR, Feb 22: A massive search operation, which many said was reminiscent of the 90s, was launched by Armed Forces in the Hari Singh High Street area of Lal Chowk in Srinagar today. Civilians were mass frisked and their belongings checked.
comes days after an attack by militants in Baghat area of Srinagar that killed two policemen.
The army personnel suddenly began the operation this afternoon and asked people to stand in queues while frisking and checking them. They had installed instant checkpoints in the market area in the heartland of Kashmir’s main city Srinagar; closed exits, and lined up all men.
They frisked men, checked their identity cards, opened bag and some of those wearing pherans to remove them, some reports said.
The frisking operation comes three days after militants had killed two policemen in an attack in the Baghat Barzulla locality of the city
Meanwhile, local news agency CNS said that Jammu and Kashmir Police has strengthened the security grid in the whole valley especially in Srinagar following the Barzulla attack on Friday in which two policemen lost their lives by the hands of LeT militants.
Following the recent militant attack police and other security agencies have also decided to carry out instant crackdowns like the one at Hari Singh High Street in Srinagar on Monday, it added.
Senior Police officer while talking to CNS said, “some of the hardcore militants have taken shelter in the Srinagar city in order to carry out the attacks on soft targets”
He added that any misadventure will be dealt very sternly as the security agencies are monitoring the situation round the clock.
It is pertinent to mention that last week two attacks were carried out by the militants first one on the son of the owner of famous Krishna Dhaba and another on policemen at Barzulla, Srinagar.
The CCTV footage of the attack later went viral on social media showing a young militant shooting the policemen from point blank range.
