NEW DELHI, April 5: The Supreme Court on Monday fixed a hearing next week on the Centre's plea to act on a report submitted to it by a panel headed by its former judge D K Jain to probe the role of the Kerala Police officers in the wrongful arrest of ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan in a 1994 espionage case.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sharad Bobde felt no urgency to pass orders by opening the probe report as pressed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, but agreed to hear the matter next week. Mehta claimed it was a matter of national importance.
The 79-year-old Narayanan waged a legal battle against the Kerala police officers who accused him of being a Pakistan spy in 1994. Besides appointing the panel two years ago, the top court had directed the Kerala government to pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation for causing immense humiliation to Narayanan.
