Biggest-ever daily surge of 1.26 lakh

NEW DELHI, Apr 8: India recorded a massive surge of 1,26,315 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending at 8 AM on Thursday, which is the biggest-ever daily increase, taking the tally of infections just short of 1.30 crore at 12,928,789.
Crossing the 9 lakh-mark, the active cases stood at 9,10,319 that makes India the fourth worst hit country in terms of the active caseload. India also recorded the second-most fatalities due to Covid-19 in single day in 2021 to 685, while the largest 714 deaths were on April 3.
As many as 9.02 crore people have been vaccinated in the country so far, 29.79 lakh in the past 24 hours.
India's death toll stood at 1,66,862, which is 1.29% of the total infections. The single day deaths stood at 322 in Maharashtra, followed by 62 in Punjab, 53 in Chhattisgarh, 40 in UP, 35 in Karnataka and 20 in Delhi.
Maharashtra reported 59,907 new Covid-19 cases in highest ever single-day spike today. The state also reported the highest single-day death count due to coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic with 322 fatalities. Out of the new cases today, Pune shared the highest with 11,023 cases, followed by Mumbai at 10,428. Delhi too recorded this year's biggest single-day rise of 5,506 cases.
Five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (3,173,261), Kerala (1,144,594), Karnataka (1,033,560), Andhra Pradesh (910,943), and Tamil Nadu (907,124).
The recovery rate further fell to 91.67% with total recoveries of 1.18 crore, including 59,258 in the last 24 hours while the active cases shot up to 7.04%, with 66,846 added to the active caseload in 24 hours. As many as 25.27 crore people have been tested for the virus, 12.37 lakh of them in 24 hours.
India is not the only country witnessing the surge in the Coronavirus infections as the WHO update showed the cases rising unabated across the globe with 13,36,64,017 infected and 28,97,996 dead. The US remains the worst-hit country with 31,634,657, followed by Brazil, India, France and Russia. However, it terms of the total number of active cases, US tops the charts, followed by France, Brazil, India and Belgium.
