Dear Editor,

Scenic spot with a huge tourism potential facing official neglect

Nag huer chaie nage moja;
gusch te cheshmew wuch pagah

A village named Panzath in Anantnag district has given birth to a beautiful spring called Panzath Nag. It is located about three kilometers away from my residential place. It is the home of five hundred (paench hath) springs that is why the village is called as panzath. The spring flows upto ten to fifteen km in the same width and then is divided into small streams. It irrigates thousands of acres of paddy fields and apple orchards producing tonns of paddy, vegetables, apple and other fruits. There is a dam built at the mouth of the spring. The spring for over decades is under the administrative control of Fisheries department which every year breeds tons of quality trout fish. Hundreds of people from different places visit the spring during summers not only to enjoy the beauty of the spring but to buy quality and tasty fish. This spring has crystal clear waters and is supplied to different areas of the district for drinking purposes. A lot of poetry has been written on the spring and its beautiful surroundings.
The saying I have quoted above has a word Nage Mouj. It is actually a place at the center of the spring. There are huge and beautiful carved rocks and besides them is a beautiful tree which adds to the beauty of the place. Some people consider the place (Nage Mouj) as sacred and worship it.The real story about the spring that I have heard from my grandparents is that a Mughal emperor had once visited this place who was fascinated by its enchanting beauty. He later built a stage made up of huge and beautifully designed rocks(sheyle) and stayed there for some time. The place has a huge tourism potential if government hands it over to the tourism department and develops it as a tourist spot. But unfortunately the place continues face official neglect.
