NEW DELHI, Jun 24: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday expressed concern over the prices of many essential commodities like pulses and edible oils skyrocketing besides the rising fuel prices, causing wide-spread distress.

Addressing the AICC general secretaries and the state in-charges on intensifying the party's outreach in the context of the continuing Covid-19 pandemic, she said this price rise is worrisome since "it is taking place at a time when livelihoods are being lost in unprecedented numbers, when there is mounting unemployment and when economic recovery is not a reality."

On the pandemic fund, Sonia said: "It is absolutely essential that our party plays an active role in ensuing full vaccination coverage as the daily rate has to treble to ensure 75% of our population gets fully vaccinated by end of this year."

"We must continue to put pressure on the Union government which has, at our Party’s insistence, finally taken on the responsibility for this. At the same time, we have to ensure that registration takes place, that vaccine hesitancy wherever evident is overcome and vaccine wastage is minimised," she said.

On the experts talking of a possible third wave a few months from now and the vulnerability of children in the coming months, she called for proactive measures so that the people are spared of this calamity. "We have to take steps to be better prepared if and when this strikes," she said, noting how the second wave of four months devastated lakhs and laks of individual families all over the country as explained in a comprehensive White Paper brought out by the party on Tuesday.
