5 arrested for involvement in sacrilege in Kathua, Ramban

JAMMU, Jul 30: Police claimed to have arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in sacrilegious act in Kathua and Ramban districts whereas situation remained tense throughout the day in Bhoond area of Basohli.
Police said that two persons were arrested in Ramban district while three others in Bhoond area of Basholi. However, after the arrest of three accused in Bhoond area, the people called off the ongoing strike.
The people continued to protest on the third consecutive day today in Bhoond and Basohli areas. The shopkeepers downed the shutters of their business establishments and the protestors burnt tyres in the middle of road.
Police said that special team constituted by the SSP Kathua on tip off, conducted raids and arrested the alleged accused persons in sacrilegious acts took place in Basholi area of Kathua district.
However, strike was also called off by social and religious organizations of Basohli and adjoining areas.
The arrested persons were identified as Shamsudin Patti alias Puttu son of Khirdin, Manzoor Ahmed alias Bantu son of Gulzar Ahmed and Mohammad Saleem son of Abdul Hamid all residents of Janu.
The arrest of alleged accused was disclosed by DIG Jammu Kathua Range S A Beig, DC Kathua Shahid Iqbal and SSP Kathua Mohan Lal in the presence of eminent citizens including Jagdish Raj Sapolia, Prem Sagar Aziz and other citizens of Basohli at Ram Leela Ground, Basohli. Soon after announcement of arrest, the strike was called off by social and religious organizations of Basohli and adjoining areas.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident of sacrilegious act in Ramban district, two persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident.
An official said that both the accused identified as Farooq Ahmed and Mohammad Yousuf, residents of Udhampur, at present living in Shibgarh area of Dhar near Patnitop, were arrested.
However, the situation was peaceful in Ramban district, today.
