Cops resort to firing in air

SRINAGAR, Sep 5: The security guards of three ministers allegedly resorted to firing in air when the locals at Pantha Chowk on Srinagar-Jammu Highway attacked the cavalcades of the ministers with stones.
Reports said that National Conference ministers Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Sakina Itoo and Mir Saifullah were on way to South Kashmir’s Anantnag district to assess the flood situation there when group of people attacked their cavalcades with stones.
The locals from flood hit areas of Pantachowk alleged that government did not pay heed to their repeated requests when they were trapped in the flash floods yesterday. Some people resorted to stone-pelting and as a result there was chaos and confusion.
Reports said that the security guards of the ministers fired some rounds in air to disperse the angry mob. Two Scorpio vehicles which were part of the cavalcade suffered damages. However, nobody was hurt in the incident, reports added.
Social welfare minister Sakina Itoo confirmed the incident and told media that they failed to understand who attacked their cavalcade and why. “The attackers were already waiting for us. As we reached there, they pelted stones. We somehow managed to escape from the spot,” she said.
