SRINAGAR, Feb 1: Separatist parties have strongly reacted to senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beig’s statrement on Pakistani refugees.
JKLF, Hurriyat Conference (G), and Hurriyat Conference (JK) has strongly condemned Beig’s statement.
JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik alleged that Beig is issuing such statements to appease his RSS masters and get union ministry.
JKLF chairman was addressing people at Buqa Aaliyah Gousia Sarai Bala here. He termed the statement of Beig as a glaring example of his Kashmir enmity. “Today Beig is telling us to find a middle path for these refugees. He is the person who during his last tenure made conspiracies and amended the law pertaining to Kashmiri women who marry outside and thus weaken the state subject law. Today his humanity has awakened from deep slumber for West Pakistan refugees and he is advising us to consider giving them citizenship of Jammu Kashmir in the name of humanity,” he added.
“We also feel bad about the plight of these refugees and advise Beig to ask his master in Delhi to immediately settle them in Indian states like Punjab, UP, Haryana etc so that in his words these people find some hope,” he said.
Terming Beig’s assertions about America as ‘absurd and funny’, the JKLF chairman said, “Lust for power has taken away wisdom from this man and to please his RSS masters, he is talking nonsense. Does he not know that America is a country of immigrants? What is common between 9/11 and settlement of these WRPs and how is this example relevant in case of a region whose ecology is at stake.”
On Beig’s referrence to Quran and Sunnah, Malik said, “According to this law India should have left Jammu and Kashmir long ago. Also thousands massacred by chauvinists in Jammu and forcefully driven out of their houses should have been provided justice long before. But the fact of the matter is that Indian rulers even rejected the resolution of Jammu Kashmir assembly people like Beig have criminally maintained silence on this and their humanity and legal wisdom has not awakened for the rights of those oppressed people.”
Ridiculing the statement of Beig about crying for Burmese Muslims, he said, “How is weeping for some brutalized humans illogical. Is anybody feeling bad for some oppressed people asking for settling them in his country or land? Actually these kind of foolish examples by Muzaffar Beig show the decaying of his wisdom, his enmity with Kashmiris, and going down to any limits for lust of power.”
Malik warned Beig that his “ill intentions” will not be allowed to succeed and people of Jammu Kashmir will defend the special status and Muslim majority character of Jammu Kashmir at every cost.
Terming the statement of Beig as "misleading" and "far from reality", Hurriyat Conference Jammu Kashmir leader and chairman Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) said that by raking up the issue of WPR, PDP is trying to strike a good deal with BJP “in a sound position”.
Questioning the political vision of Beig, he said, “The PDP leader should re-learn the interpretation of law as he (Beig) has produced vague and irrelevant formula of settling WPR in the state by touching the issues of US, Bangladeshi and Burma Muslims.”
“Such nonsense of finding ‘middle path’ can come only from the mouth of a failed lawyer. This shows Beig's political immaturity,” Shah said, adding that the issue of US, Burma and Bangladeshi Muslims are entirely different from that of West Pakistan Refugees.
He said Beig’s statement was aimed at scoring political points and grabbing of power. “By issuing such statements, Beig couldn't even impress anyone and everyone came to know about his intentions."
Reiterating his stand vis-a-vis WPRs Shah said that on humanitarian grounds these refugees need to be settled in other parts of India as per accepted norms during partition. “On one hand, Sri Lankan and Tamil refugees are being sent back and on the other WPRs are thrust upon Kashmiris in order to change the demography and Muslim majority status of Jammu Kashmir. Before taking any decision regarding such sensitive issues the people of the state should be consulted before as it concerns their future,” Shah added.
Taking a strong note over Beig’s assertions about the settlement of West Pakistan Refugees, Hurriyat Conference (G) lambasted Beig, saying that PDP has literally bowed down before BJP for greed of power.
Talking to KNS, Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar, before leaving for New Delhi, said, “If NC’s founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah sold Kashmir for power, Peoples Democratic Party seems to have traded the honour and dignity of the state.”
“The fact is that PDP has entered into sell out and is speaking BJP’s language. Beig is not an Islamic scholar who can issue fatwas. He may know the law the best but can’t give Islamic fatwas. Before issuing fatwas, he should consult the Islamic scholars,” he said.
Akbar said that Beig should recall that Jammu Kashmir has its own constitution and according to which no Indian citizen is allowed to settle, become permanent resident or voter of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. “These refugees whose number exceeds five lakhs, being from West Pakistan are not the permanent residents of Jammu Kashmir and cannot be given such status,” he said.
“We also agree that the settlement of Pakistani refugees is a humanitarian issue but if Government of India wants to settle them on humanitarian ground why don’t they settle them in other states of the India like Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan which do not have any special status,” Akbar asked.
