Hectic political activity on polls eve

JAMMU, Feb 6: Hectic last-minute political activity for four Rajya Sabha seats, where elections will be held tomorrow was seen today.
Though, election is being conducted for four seats that have fallen vacant, situation has become more complicated as the Election Commission has issued three different notifications, thus making them three separate elections. Therefore, electors will have to vote thrice, twice for one candidate each and once for two of the one candidate on tomorrow.
But the trickiest election is for the third notification for which polling has to take place to elect two members. Those in fray are Ghulam Nabi Azad (Congress), Chander Mohan Sharma (BJP) and Nazir Ahmad Laway (PDP).
Former leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha and former Congress minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is seven candidates seeking re-election from the state as his term in the Rajya Sabha.
The NC and Congress together with 27 votes, need five more to send the Leader of Opposition back to Rajya Sabha in the 87-member J&K state assembly that forms the electoral college for the polls. The PDP has 28 seats, the BJP 25, the NC 15 and the Congress 12 members. Seven independents were also elected in the 2014 assembly polls.
Meanwhile, a day ahead of crucial Rajya Sabha polls, Congress legislature party held its meeting to chalk out their strategy for tomorrow’s polls at the residence of the former minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Reports said that Congress state chief, Prof Saif-Ud Din Soz has asked all the legislatures of the party to be remain present in the assembly on tomorrow and vote for the Ghulam Nabi Azad and NC candidates Sajad Kichloo and Nasir Aslam Wani.
Soz also asked the party legislatures to request the Independent candidates to vote in favour of the Ghulam Nabi Azad and two NC leaders for the Rajya Sabha.
Congress leaders also met independent MLA Engineer Rashid today to persuade him to vote for the alliance candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad. “However, Rasheed asked them to clarify several points related to the hanging of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru. He didn’t make any commitment with the leaders and has kept his options open whether to vote or to abstain,” sources said.
