Shutdown continues in Palhallan over youth’s death

SRINAGAR, Feb 12: Life in Srinagar including other districts of the valley returned to normal today after the shutdown and restrictions of three consecutive days. Shops and other business establishments across the city reopened today after a complete halt of three days. Moreover, the public transport also resumed plying normally on all routes.
On Monday, February 9, a complete shutdown was observed across the valley to mark the second death anniversary of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru who was hanged on February 9, 2013 inside Tihar jail.
Following the shut down call, the authorities had imposed restrictions in many parts of the valley including several areas in old city to quell any protest demonstrations.
Shutdown continued across the valley on Tuesday also following the killing of a youth in Palhallan area of Pattan in north Kashmir. 20 year old Farooq Ahmad Bhat of Palhallan was killed and two others critically injured when police forces opened indiscriminate fire on a group of people protesting the nocturnal raids in their area. The incident resulted in massive anger and anguish from people across the valley.
The separatist groups had called for a shutdown on Tuesday February 10 in protest against the youth’s killing. To quash the protest and demonstrations the authorities had imposed curfew across several areas in old city falling under 7 police jurisdictions.
The curfew and the restrictions continued on Wednesday February 11 also which marked the 31st anniversary of JKLF leader Mohammad Maqbool Bhat’s hanging who was hanged on February 11 1984.
In view of Maqbool Bhat’s hanging anniversary, separatist leaders had called for a shutdown on February 11. Normal life across the valley came to a halt due to the shutdown and restrictions for three days. Curfew continued in parts of the old city on third consecutive day on Wednesday also. According to the concerned officials the restrictions were imposed to avoid any untoward incident from happening.
On Thursday morning, authorities lifted restrictions from all parts of the old city. After the complete shutdown of three days markets across the city witnessed a huge hustle and bustle today.
The reports from other parts of valley revealed that the normalcy returned in all districts of the valley with no untoward incident reported from anywhere. However, a shutdown was observed in Palhalan area in North Kashmir where a youth was gunned down by police two days ago.
