Highway reopened for one-way traffic

SRINAGAR, Mar 10: After remaining closed for two consecutive days Jammu Srinagar national highway was reopened today for one way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar. The highway was blocked due to landslides triggered by recent snowfall at several places along the route.
According to the officials at traffic control room only light motor vehicles were allowed to ply from Jammu to Srinagar today. No vehicular traffic was allowed from Srinagar to Jammu.
“National highway was opened today for one way traffic. Vehicles were allowed to ply from Jammu to Srinagar only. We had informed people to cross the Nagrota area i till 8:30 a.m in morning. Only those vehicles were allowed to ply which crossed Nagrota before 8:30 a.m. After that no vehicle was allowed. The road clearance is going on. Highway is being cleared off the debris caused due to landslides at many places,” a senior official at traffic control room revealed.
300-kms long Jammu Srinagar highway was shut on March 7 due to the occurrence of landslides at several places along the route. Heavy snowfall and rains had caused landslides in the area at many places which resulted in blockade of the road.
The authorities revealed that most of the places were landslides had occurred were cleared off the debris while as the work to restore the route was on full swing.
“There were landslides at many areas including Gamroo, Ramsoo, Hingni and Khira. The authorities have deployed labourers and required machinery to clear the road off the debris. The clearance work is going on since the weather has shown some improvement. If weather remains favourable highway will be thrown open for all vehicles,” an official said.
The 300-kms long national highway serves as the single connecting link between Kashmir valley and the rest of the world. Owing to blockade the continued disruption in traffic movement halts the supply of essential good, eatables and other commodities to valley.
Meanwhile officials at MET department said the weather was likely to remain dry during this week. They said there was not any prediction for heavy downpour till March 13.
“There is good news that no heavy snow/rains are expected till 13 of this month. Weather is likely to remain dry and pleasant during this week. However on March 13 and 14 light rains may occur at isolated places only,” Sonam Lotus, director MET department said.
