Rains lash valley

Weather likely to improve from Tuesday

SRINAGAR, May 18: Rainfall occurred at several places across the valley since Sunday evening. According to state MET department light to moderate rains occurred at most of the places across the state during past 24 hours.
With the impact of the western disturbances over the state rains along with thundershowers lashed the valley since yesterday evening, bringing a slight decline in the minimum and maximum temperatures at various places in valley.
Spokesperson at state MET department revealed that Srinagar received around 16.7 millimeters of rain last evening.
“Rains lashed most parts of the valley including Jammu region during Sunday night. The valley witnessed light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorm during last night. In South Kashmir Qazigund area along Srinagar Jammu national highway received around 8.2 millimeters of rain during last evening. The tourist spot of Pahalgam received 16.4 millimeters of rain where as rainfall recorded at Kokernag since yesterday was 6.7 millimeters,” spokesperson at MET department said.
He added, “Several places across north Kashmir also received light to moderate rainfall during last night. The ski resort of Gulmarg received around 22.2 millimeters of rain during last night. Kupwara received highest amount of rainfall. The rainfall measured at Kupwara was 29.7 millimeters. Moreover, Jammu region also received rainfall till today morning. Around 8.4 millimeters of rain was received at Jammu last night.”
The officials at MET department said that there was prediction of more rains in the valley in next 24 hours. They said weather was likely to improve from Tuesday onwards.
“The impact of western disturbances is still over the state. Light to moderate rainfall along with thundershowers may occur at isolated places across valley during next 24 hours. Tomorrow also weather is likely to remain cloudy and it may continue for next 24 hours. However there is going to be improvement in weather from Tuesday onwards,” officials at MET department said.
The downpour has resulted in a in a slight dip in minimum and maximum temperatures at several places across valley.
According to MET department the minimum temperature recorded at summer capital, Srinagar on May 17 was 12 degrees Celsius. Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 22.4 degrees Celsius.
“Temperatures dipped at several places due to rainfall particularly hilly areas. The minimum temperature recorded at Gulmarg on Sunday was 4.5 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius,” spokesperson at MET office said.
