Shutdown affects normal life

SRINAGAR, May 21: Restrictions were imposed in some parts of old city of Srinagar today, while normal life was affected due to strike called by Hurriyat Conference (M).
The call for the strike was given on the death anniversaries of Moulana Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone. Hurriyat (M) had also asked the people to assemble at Martyrs Graveyard here.
Restrictions were imposed in some areas falling under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Safa Kadal. Most of the shops, business establishments and educational institutions were shut, while government offices and banks recorded thin attendance.
The public transport was off the roads. However, private cars, cabs and auto-rickshaws were plying normally.
In the morning, CRPF and police were deployed in down town to enforce restrictions.
The forces also erected checkpoints and barricades on some roads leading to Eidgah in old city. They also laid concertina wires to stop any type of movement. Pedestrians were stopped and checked at some areas of downtown by police and CRPF personnel.
The security was tight around the Rajori Kadal. Reports from various district headquarters including Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, Baramulla, Sopore, Anantnag, Kupwara and other areas said that shops and business establishments remained mostly closed while traffic plied partially.
In Palhalan Pattan, scores of youth took to streets and pelted stones on Police and CRPF personnel deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and several other separatist leaders were placed under house arrest.
