“After the continuous efforts of 12 days today at around 3 p.m we retrieved dead body of Hasseeb Ahmad Bhat of Khanyaar area. His body was recovered from river Jhelum at Gagarpora area in Noorbagh in old city. The search operation was resumed early in morning by river police and JK police,” Manzoor Ahmad, station house officer at Maharaj Gunj police station said.
He said the body was handed over to the family of the deceased for performing last rights. S.H.O said the search to find another boy was on.
“The search operation to locate another drowned boy is going on. So far we have not been able to trace the body of Faizan Ahmad Malik of Sonwar area. We are making efforts to retrieve his body as soon as we can,” SHO said.
On May 10, two teenagers Faizan Ahmad Malik and Haseeb Ahmad Bhat had drowned in river Jhelum at Zainakadal area in old city. According to eye witnesses the duo were playing cricket at around 8.00 AM in the morning when the fateful incident happened. The boys had slipped into the river while trying to retrieve their cricket ball.
Though some locals present had jumped into the river to help them out but they could catch hold of the boys due to fast water flow. For past 12 days the search operations by commandos and river police were on to trace the drowned boys.
Police officials revealed that due to the high water level in Jhelum and fast flow it was quite difficult to trace the drowned teenagers. Police had intensified the search operation to locate the bodies after protests by the families of the teenagers.
“Given the flow of underwater currents I was afraid that the bodies may have flown down the stream to far areas. Actually the underwater currents are very fast which is why the search is not an easy task,” Manzoor Ahmad said.
A pal of gloom descended in the local area of the deceased boy when his dead body was brought home. Hundreds of people joined Haseeb’s funeral procession and bid him a tearful adieu.
