JAMMU, Aug 30: At a time when sportspersons across the country are preparing for the biggest sporting extravaganza .ie Goa National Games it has ever seen, the sports in Jammu and Kashmir is in total disarray. And to make things worse, the recently constituted sports council, which supervises sports in the state has denied representation to all the sports events qualified for the above said games.
Sports associations recognized with the sports Council have alleged that all norms were thrown out of the window to pick up blue eyed ineligibles in the 29 member body, which is headed by none other than the Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed. They have alleged that representatives of the affiliated associations, outstanding sportsmen and mediamen covering sports events who should have been thoughtfully picked up in accordance with the provisions of the constitution, were ignored to pick up people who did not fulfill the criteria and those who failed the sports repeatedly.
The decision of the PDP-BJP govt has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the management and administration of the sports at a time when sportspersons are preparing for coming national games scheduled to be held in November in 2016, many within the sports circles believe that though a setback, it has exposed government's uncalled for interference and high handedness in flouting norms of an autonomous institution to accommodate its blue eyed. "It is fair government cannot blatantly encroach upon the constitution of an autonomous body" said sports administrator, who failed to find his name in the list. "We have a gentleman who conquered Everest recently; we have former Indian handball captain, national champions. Are these achievements not enough to qualify for a berth in the council in the category of outstanding sportsmen?" he said.
Meanwhile, there is resentment over the inclusion of people who have got a repeat in the new body, but have discredited themselves and their associations by their 'mis'conduct during their previous tenures. Representatives of such associations which have been blacklisted by the council itself, have surprisingly found berths again. Some associations have got multiple representations even as they have little to show on their work diaries.
Expressing their concern over non serious attitude of the PDP-BJP govt, they said that the sportsmen who put their blood and sweat for a showdown in sporting arena are already a defeated lot. Low on morale, they lack infrastructural facilities, pay from their pockets to represent the state in national championships, are denied even paltry refreshment they are entitled to and to top it up, faulty SROs deprive them of their legitimate rights in reservations when it comes to admission in professional colleges.
