Fruit growers demand Rs 2890-Cr compensation for horticulture

SRINAGAR, Nov 24: Fruit Growers cum Traders Union (FGTCU) today demanded Rs 2890 core compensation for horticulture.
Addressing media persons FGTCU president Bashir Ahmad Bashir said t devastated floods in September 2014 hit the horticulture industry very badly.
“Every stock of fruit stored in godowns, shops, residential house and other places got destroyed. Even the trucks loaded with fruits could not reach to desired destination as roads were blocked by flood waters,” he said.
He added that they had taken up the matter with the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and also submitted a memorandum in writing, seeking compensation of Rs 2890 crores.
“The recent package announced by prime minister Narendra Modi has only Rs 500 crore for horticulture industry. It is ridiculous and also amounts to adding salt on the injuries of aggrieved fruit growers and traders,” he said.
He said after devastated floods in September 2014, the inclement weather conditions had also adversely affected productions of fruits in their orchards. “The production reduced considerably after various diseases crept in orchards. Our hope was that PM wound announce package for horticulture as per our need and expectations. However, his announcement was nothing but a ridiculous,” he added.
Speaking on the occasion, senior executive member of the Union, Bashir Ahmad Baba resented the package, terming it peanuts.
“We want the government to show seriousness in providing compensation as promised earlier,” he demanded.
“We are facing financial burdens and immediate action should be taken to get us out of financial liabilities,” he added. MIr Mohammad Amin was also present at the press conference.
