JAMMU, Apr 28 (Agencies): Director General (Prisons) Dr S P Vaid today claimed that around 100 foreign militants are languishing in different jails across the state.
"There are 14 jails across the state having a capacity of 3000 but total number of inmates presently are 2400,'' the DG said here in an interview with news agency UNI, adding that out of which around 100 prisoners are foreign militants (most of them Pakistani).
On "clash of ego'' between local criminals and foreign militants, he said, "We are taking all steps so that nothing unwanted happen and for that the inmates are being involved in yoga, art of living programmes, sports and co-curricular activities.''
Moreover, the militants are also lodged in separate barracks inside the jails as preventive measures, the DG asserted.
On security, he said, "though the jail staff is maintaining close watch on each and every activity of the inmates, the CCTVs installed are also of great help in monitoring them.''
Dr Vaid, however, said that e-Prisons and e-Court systems which started countrywide is also contributing a lot towards safety as well as security measures.
"Inmates are produced before the court through video conferencing and statement is recorded, which not only saves time, fuel, prevents loss to state ex-chequer but also proved beneficial with context to security,'' said the Prisons chief.
On reformation of staff, he said that various activities are being conducted by the department to keep the jail staff/employees healthy and positive in dealing inmates as "dealing'' criminals is a hard-task.
The DG admitted that 400 vacancies in various categories are lying vacant, which will soon be filled but till then, a request has been made to the Jammu and Kashmir police department to provide policemen on deputation to overcome the shortage/crisis of staff.
