Torrential rains lash valley

More downpour predicted: Met

SRINAGAR, May 30: Heavy rains along with strong thunderstorms lashed most of the places across the valley on Monday. The state meteorological department revealed that rainfall/thundershowers occurred at many places in Kashmir.
“Large rainfall was witnessed across valley today in afternoon. The rainfall coupled with strong lightening and thunders occurred in all parts of valley including plains and hilly regions,” spokesperson at met office said.
He added, “The hill resort of Pahalgam recorded traces of rain while 2 millimeters of rain was recorded in Kokernag area of South Kashmir.”
According to Met office Srinagar recorded 3.0 millimeters of rain in afternoon on Monday. Rainfall occurred in both northern and Sothern areas of Kashmir. Across South Kashmir Qazigund area along Srinagar Jammu national highway recorded 4 millimeters of rain on Monday afternoon. Over 3.2 mm of rain was recorded in Banihal area.”
The spokesperson at Met department said that maximum and minimum temperature witnessed a drop at several places in the valley owing to precipitation. He said there were predictions of more rainfall in the valley during the next 24 hours.
The Met officials said that weather was likely to remain dry from Tuesday evening.
“There are chances of moderate to heavy rains in the next 24 hours. Light to heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places over the state during the next 24 hours. Moreover, there are chances of hailstorm across few places in the valley. From Tuesday evening, the weather is expected to improve though skies will remain partly cloudy,” a spokesperson said.
According to Met officials, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 26.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 12.7 degrees Celsius on Monday.
The maximum temperature in Jammu city settled at 36.4 degrees Celsius and a low of 23.6 degrees Celsius was recorded in Jammu city on Monday. The Met officials revealed that weather was likely to remain dry and unchanged in Jammu region during next 24 hours.
Maximum temperature along hilly regions of valley witnessed a decline of few notches due to torrential rains. In the tourist spot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir, maximum temperature settled at 22.8 degrees Celsius and a low of 5.6 degrees Celsius.
The spokesperson at Met department said that the next wet spell was likely expected on June 4 and 5.
