Clashes in Nowhatta after Friday prayers

SRINAGAR, July 1: Clashes erupted between protesters and police after Friday prayers at Nowhatta here today.
Police burst smoke shells and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the protesters, who were pelting stones. Reports said immediately after Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid, some youth took to the streets and held protest demonstration shouting slogans.
When the protesters reached at the main gate of the Jamia Masjid, close to Nowhatta Chowk, policemen who were deployed there asked the protesters to end their protest and they would not be allowed to proceed. The protesters tried to proceed. The forces swung into action by resorting to lathi-charge.
The youth pelted stones towards them. The forces also fired smoke shells towards the protesters with the intension to disperse them. The forces action managed to disperse the protesters.
Reports said youth also took to the streets at Sopore. The large number of policemen deployed in the township did not allow them to hold protest demonstration. The police fired smoke shells and resorted to lathi-charge. The youth pelted stones, the clashes continued for several hours.
