Life hit again by strike in Kashmir, rail track damaged near Palhalan

SRINAGAR, Dec 5: The authorities today foiled Lal Chowk march called by separatist leadership, while normal life was again hit in Kashmir due to a general strike.
In view of the call for march by separatists, restrictions were today imposed at Lal Chowk. Senior leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were placed under house arrest at their respective residences at Hyderpora and Nageen. However, JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik appeared at SariaBalla and tried to march towards Lal Chowk.
Restrictions were imposed at Lal Chowk. JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik was arrested outside the Dastageer Sahib shrine at Saria Bala here. Earlier, he was forced by police to take refuge inside the shrine to evade detention.
Because of the strike, most shops and other business establishments remained closed in most parts of Valley today. Public transport was also mostly off the roads but private transport was plying on roads at several places.
Reports said security forces resorted to firing in air and tear-smoke shelling to disperse the youth who, pelted stones on them at Reka Chowk, Lachhmanpora and Sheikh Dawood Colony. The firing in air occurred when some youth attacked police vehicles with stones.
Authorities today suspended train service from Pattan to Baramulla in North Kashmir after protesters alleged caused damage to the railway track between Palhalan and Delina area of the district.
A railway official told media that unidentified protesters have damaged the railway track between Palhalan and Delina areas of Baramulla district forcing them to suspend the service from Pattan to Baramulla.
“We have started the repairing work and hopefully the service will resume from Tuesday,” he said and added that they have filed a complaint in this regard in a local police station.
Meanwhile, unidentified persons pelted stones on a moving train near Machow Chanapora railway bridge causing damage to the Railway door. “The windowpanes of the tail suffered damages, however, no one was hurt,” said the official adding that it was a sheer incident of security lapse.
