SRINAGAR, Feb 14: Protests were held at Kashmir University here on Tuesday against the killing of two civilian during an encounter in Frisal area of Kulgam district on Feb 12.
Early in morning students from various departments of Kashmir University assembled near Naseem Bagh and took out a protest march towards Allama Iqbal Library of the varsity.
Chanting slogans and condemning killings, students decried the use of force on unarmed civilians by the security forces.
The protesting students demanded an immediate and a time bound probe into the civilian killings and pressed for stern action against those involved in the incident.
"We have assembled here to protest the killings of two innocent civilians by security forces in Kulgam. The targeted killings by forces have become an easy affair for the security forces but no one is tried or convicted. It is shameful and brutality on part of both government and security forces for these unending murders," a university scholar said.
"Forces keep on killing innocents while the government doesn't pay any heed. Is blood of people of Kashmir so cheap that it can be spilled anywhere anytime," a member of Kashmir University Students Union said.
On Sunday two civilians were killed and several injured during an encounter in Kulgam district of south Kashmir.
22 year old Mushtaq Itoo was killed after he was shot at by the security forces during a protest in Kulgam. One more civilian was allegedly shot dead by the forces near the encounter site.
The students said that state government should have called for a probe and strict action against the killers which was never done.
"Civilians continue to be victims and the government continues to play filthy politics. These puppet governments in the state will continue to shield the killers and murderers," a group of protesting students said.
The Kashmir University Students Union (KUSU) strongly condemned the killings and asked for an immediate probe.
