Fresh cases of pellet injuries in eyes in hospitals since Sunday

SRINAGAR, Feb 15: At least six fresh cases of pellet injuries in eyes have been reported at SMHS hospital here during past four days.
The doctors at SMHS revealed that the scale of injuries inflicted on victims has been serious in several cases.
The hospital authorities revealed that two injured patients were suffering from serious eye damage caused due to pellet firing on people.
The doctors at the Ophthalmology department of SMHS said that the injured patients were given primary treatment at the hospital and were still receiving medical attention at the ward.
"We have received around 6 fresh cases of eye injuries at the hospital since Sunday. The victims are being treated as per the scale of injuries inflicted. Two of the victims suffered serious eye damage due to pellets," Dr. Aadil, Registrar medicines at SMHS hospital said.
He said both the victims were operated upon in the hospital.
Around a dozen persons with pellet injuries have been admitted in SKIMS and JVC hospital since Sunday as protests broke out in several parts of South and North Kashmir after the killing of two civilians by security forces.
The doctors at SMHS hospital revealed that the victims inflicted with pellet injuries in eyes during last summer turmoil were still receiving treatment at the hospital.
They said that revision surgeries were still being conducted on the victims with grievous injuries to one or both the eyes while
According to doctors at SMHS hospital near about 50 people with grievous pellet injuries had lost vision while 40 victims were feared to lose vision owing to severe damage to eyes.
“The pellet victims of last year with serious damage to eyes are still receiving medical attention in the hospital. Surgeries are still conducted on scores of such victims. Many have severe damage to both the eyes. Some victims, with less damage are regaining their vision," Dr. Aadil said.
The medicos working at the hospital said the fresh cases had yet again reminded them of the chaos witnessed at the hospital during the summer unrest.
"Since October last year there was a halt in pellet related injuries. However, since Sunday, injured with pellet injuries in eyes have yet again reported at the hospital. We hope that it stops again," a doctor at Ophthalmology department of the hospital said.
