JAMMU, Feb 18: Despite overnight rain and cloudy sky on the national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for one-way traffic only and vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar today.
After rains at night, the sky is heavily cloudy since this morning, a traffic police official said.
However, he said, the highway was through for one-way traffic and as per schedule vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar, he said, adding that no vehicle, including the Army and paramilitary forces, would be allowed from opposite direction.
He said hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and trucks laden with essentials, left different parts of the Jammu region early this morning for the Valley.
To avoid any accident and traffic jam on the highway, it has been decided to continue only one-way traffic on the highway. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the road, is already on the job to make the highway safe for two way journey as the road is still very narrow at some places due to landslides.
Traffic on the highway was frequently disrupted due to snowfall and landslides during the past one month resulting in sharp increase of prices of essentials commodities as Valley is entirely dependent on imports, particularly fresh vegetables during winter, meat and chicken.
Meanwhile, dozens of far-flung and remote areas, particularly in the frontier district of Kupwara and Bandipora, besides near LoC remained cut off with their respective district headquarters due to accumulation of heavy snow on roads in north Kashmir. There was rain during the night in almost entire North Kashmir.
