Separatists call for election boycott
SRINAGAR, Mar 16: Senior separatist leadership today urged people to boycott upcoming parliament by-elections, saying it provides India an opportunity to mislead world community.

In a joint press release, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik today at Hyderpora while calling people to boycott upcoming elections, said that amid 10 lakh forces personnel, the election drama has lost relevance and credibility.

According to the press release, the separatist leadership called an immediate press conference and media was accordingly informed. “But authorities denied media to attend said press briefing. Meanwhile a large contingent of police present did not allow party activists and media to cover the event. Later Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik were arrested and taken to police station Humhama,” said the press release.

Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar said Mirwaiz, Malik along with pro-freedom activists were not allowed to meet Hurriyat Chairman, Syed Ali Geelani. “It was later that Geelani sahib along with party activists came out of his residence and after deliberating over prevailing situation, decided to address media but media men were not allowed to report event. The leadership in order to meet press moved towards the Airport road. However, they were arrested and lodged in police station Humhama,” he said.

Joint leadership, while criticising the state authorities, said that police action and restrictions on press conference proved that upcoming elections are mere drama. It is not a democratic process but better to say a drama being enacted with the help of armed forces, they said.

“Allow us to meet people, asked joint leadership and said that not a single person will cast their vote, while challenging state authorities. They are strangulating the legitimate voice and they and their agents will be exposed, said resistance leaders,” it added.

In a joint statement while rejecting these elections, the leadership said that these elections are being enacted to mislead international community and India is desperate to justify its “occupation and as such these shame elections are being enacted.”
