Late Vijay Merchant's son no more

MUMBAI Apr 16: Amar Mechant, the son of late Vijay Merchat died here last month. This was revealed by Madhav Apte at the Legends Club meeting, where the birth centenary of late Vinoo Mankad, the former India all-rounder was celebrated at the CCI.

Late speaking exclusively, Madhav Apte said, "Amar was a very reserved person. He, however, was occasionally attending the Legends Meeting".

"Vijay Merchant named his son Amar to remember his friendship with Amar Singh".

"Vijay Merchant and Amar Singh were good friends and whenever Amar Singh used to visit Mumbai (from Saurashtra), he was Merchant's staying guest".

"Amar Singh was a fast bowler and used to bowl Vijay Merchant and give him some regular batting practice in his building compound", Apte added.

Amar Singh, who played 7 Tests for India died at the very young age of 30 years.

Vijay Merchant's daughter, Aditi, says, "my brother died on March 15th at the age of 58 years. He had some heart problems and died due to heart-attack".

"I had heard from my father that Amar was named after Amar Singh. That was many many years ago when I was not even born".

"My father and Amar Singh had mutually agreed to name their sons as Amar and Vijay respectively. I am not sure whether Amar Singh had any son and if so, whether he named him after my father's name".
