Met predicts rainy spell from Thursday

Srinagar records season's highest temperature

SRINAGAR, May 24: While Kashmir valley has been witnessing pleasant weather for the past few days the meteorological department has predicted a rainy spell from May 25.
The spokesperson at local Met office said that there was possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall at several places in valley on May 25 and 26. The officials at Met office revealed that there was a scope of western disturbance which was likely to strike the state of Jammu and Kashmir from May 25 onwards.
Though valley has witnessed rain showers during past one week, the weather has mostly remained dry.
"There has been rain at several places across the state during past one week. We are expecting one more western disturbance on May 25 which is likely to result in more precipitation," spokesperson at Met department said.
He added, "Light to moderate rather heavy rainfall along with thundershowers may likely occur at isolated of the places across J&K state from Wednesday night only. The weather is likely to improve from Friday evening however rainfall may again occur on May 27. The Western Disturbances are falling under a sequence, one after another."
The officials at met department said that the maximum and minimum temperature in Kashmir valley settled at least two degrees below normal in past one week while an abrupt increase was recorded on Wednesday.
"There has not been much rise in mercury in the month of May. The normal temperature during this month settles mostly at 24 to 25. However the day temperature in Kashmir settles at around 23 degrees Celsius for past one week. On Wednesday there was a rise of 4 degrees in day temperature. In coming week there may be more an increase in mercury," a Met official said.
Met department revealed that the summer capital of Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 28.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday which was the highest of this summer season so far. The minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar on Wednesday was 14.7 degrees Celsius.
"The maximum temperature in tourist spot of Pahalgam settled at 24.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The night temperature settled at 8.2 degrees Celsius," Met official said.
According to Met officials, Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of 39.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 25.0 degrees Celsius.
