Students, business community decry ban

SRINAGAR, May 29: As the mobile internet clampdown continues in Kashmir valley, the blockade of the services has pushed the people across Kashmir, particularly students and business community, to a huge inconvenience.
While the blockade of the services has resulted in a massive halt for business community in valley, the same has pushed the students and job aspirants to immense trouble. The students preparing for various examinations have decried the ban on mobile internet calling it the violation of the very basic human rights.
Pertinently mobile internet service was suspended by the authorities on Saturday following the killing of top Hizb commander Sabzar Ahmad Bhat during an encounter in Tral area of South Kashmir. The killing had resulted in widespread protests and clashes across Kashmir.
The mobile internet service was suspended only a day after government had revoked a month long ban on social networking sites in Kashmir valley.
"We are not able to access study material owing to internet ban. We cannot apply online for admissions in colleges and varsities outside the state. This is awful that students have been pushed to a huge inconvenience by the government. We do not even know how long this ban shall continue. First they blocked social media and now they have paralysed the student community by snapping internet services," Umer Altaf, a student from Khanyar area said.
The Internet ban has not only irked the youth but fetched huge loss to the people associated with business. The ban has irked the people associated with online trade.
"The business community has suffered huge losses due to internet ban. This is not for the first time that the government has barred the services but they have been doing it on regular basis. Last year the ban continued for over six months. Such steps have only alienated people in valley," Mohammad Ayaz who deals with software business said.
The executives of various service provider companies in Kashmir said that as of now they had not received any directions from the government to restore the mobile internet services in Kashmir.
"On Saturday we suspended the mobile internet services for a temporary period of time in Kashmir valley acting over the directions of the law enforcement authorities. We will be unable to provide internet services to our customers till we get further directions by the government to restore the services. We will restore our services as soon as we receive the next direction from the authorities," customer executive at Vodafone company revealed.
