SRINAGAR, July 20: Transporters call for strike against government’s proposed plans to shift Batamaloo bus terminal to Parimpora evoked partial response today.
Pertinent to mention here that valley based transporters had called for ‘chakka jam’ today against governments proposed plan to shift bus terminal at Batamaloo to Parimpora area on the city outskirts.
Bus owners left buses of Western Bus Service at the Batamaloo General Bus Stand as a mark of protest saying the government is adamant to snatch their livelihood under the garb of smart city project.
However the call evoked partial response throughout the valley including Srinagar city as all passenger vehicles, auto rickshaws and cabs could be seen plying normally throughout the day, although shops at busy Batamaloo market remained closed as a mark of protest and buses
In order to exert a pull on government to relook its decision, the transporters had threatened to go for protracted strike. However, the government as per reliable sources is all set to execute its plan of relocating Batamaloo bus terminal to Parimpora.
If transporters are to be believed, the government’s move to shift the bus terminal from existing place will not only cause inconvenience to commuters but also render 2.5 lakh people associated with transport industry jobless.
Meanwhile transporters under the banner of Western Bus Union, staged demonstrations to protest governments plans to shift Batamaloo bus stand to Parimpora.
Mohammad Sultan Dar, Manager Batamaloo bus terminal while talking to reporters announced to continue chakka jam in Kashmir for indefinite period.
Dar said that government will not be allowed to execute its plans into reality and their fight against dictatorial plan will continue till government revokes its decision.
“We have announced this strike at the cost of our families, our livelihood depends only on this trade and in case the government shifts bus terminal from Batamalloo thousands of people will be unemployed,” said he.
