Kulgam villagers allege 'vandalism' by security-men during operation

ANANTNAG, July 23: The people at Nidura Nilow village of southern Kulgam district today alleged that security forces resorted to vandalism during a cordon and search operation.
Locals said that the forces late last evening launched cordon and search operation in the village. During the search operation which continued for hours together, local youth came out of their houses and clashed with the forces by throwing stones at them to disrupt the operation. The security forces, during the clashes, also lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse the youth.
Late in the night, locals alleged, when the clashes ended and the youth moved back to their houses, the security personnel vandalised the houses and other property.
"They forced their entry into our houses and broke window panes, electronic gadgets, utensils and whatever they came across. Besides vandalising the household goods the forces thrashed the inmates," a local said.
The locals alleged that they also damaged scores of vehicles parked on roads and within the house premises.
A resident said that a group of at least seven forces personal came running into his house and started abusing and breaking whatever came their way. "After I tried to stop them they slapped and kicked me," another local said.
Police said they are looking into the matter.
