SRINAGAR, July 27: Police on Thursday scuttled Opposition National Conference (NC) proposed Rajbhawan march against civilian killings and price hike. Several party workers and activists including Provincial Youth President, Salman Ali Sagar were taken into preventive custody.
Chanting anti-government slogans, dozens of party activists led by NC General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar started marching from party headquarters at Nawai-Subh to Rajbhawan to protest the unabated civilian killings, routine curfew and back breaking price hike by the PDP-BJP led dispensation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Protesters who had carried banners and placards reading “Down with GST”, “Stop innocent killings” reached near Ram Munshibagh police station, where contingents of police deployed in advance intercepted them and did not allowed them to proceed.
Protesting NC workers however offered a stiff resistance and tried to break the police cordon, which lead to minor scuffle between two sides.
The police bundled scores of NC workers including party’s provincial youth President Slaman Ali Sagar in the already awaiting police vehicles and detained all of them at Ram Munshibagh police station.
Talking to media persons, NC General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar while denouncing repeated curfews and unabated civilian killings in Kashmir said that “curfew and restrictions have become regular exercise of this government, entire population has been made hostage while Srinagar city is seriously boring the brunt of vindictiveness”.
Sagar, who also represents Khanyar Assembly constituency, minced no words take coalition government head-on, saying repeated curfews have severally affected business sector while as the government instead of taking remedial measures has been leaving no moment spared to add to the woes of general public.
“Every single person has been affected due to repeated curfews in Srinagar and imposing restrictions in eight police stations areas has become a norm. Government despite enjoying support has miserably failed to work on ground,” Sagar added.
Replying to a query regarding arrest of separatist leaders by National Investigation Agency (NIA) Sagar said, it is for the government to see as to what is happening around.
About approval of ex-post facto approval for amendment of the Constitution (Application to J&K), he said, “we had already said that passing Presidential order is itself a loss to Article 370 of the state. PDP staged a drama before rolling out GST in the state but we had categorically warned about its ramifications”
