SRINAGAR, Aug 5: Clashes broke out between security forces and students of Islamia College at Hawal area in old city after the students took out a protest rally claiming that the slain LeT militant Abid Hamid Mir of Hajin was a student of the same college.
Reports said that as soon as the news about killing of LeT Militant in an encounter with security forces in Sopore town spread in the college, hundreds of students of Islamia College of Science and Commerce assembled at college ground and staged demonstrations against killing of their friend.
Protesting students claimed that Abid Hamid of Hajin in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district was the student of Islamia College who was pursuing B.Com.
Students later tried to march towards main road to register their protest. However, police and paramilitary CRPF deployed in the area charged batons and lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse the rally resulting fierce clashes between the two sides that continued for half an hour.
“We want the government to desist from killing students as this policy will provoke students to take arms,” said a protesting student.
He said that nor the government neither its forces want peace to prevail in Kashmir which has been experiencing violence since past more than three decades.
