Pak shells 8 border villages, 14 posts in Mendhar

MENDHAR, Aug 16: Pakistan today violated the ceasefire by shelling forward posts and civilian areas along the Line of Control in Mendhar and Mankote-Balnoi sectors of Poonch district, drawing retaliation from the Indian army.
This is the fourth consecutive day that Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire along the LoC. The exchange of firing, which started at around 6.00 AM, ended at 9.00 AM.
In the Pakistan shelling in border villages, two oxen were killed in Chhajla Patri area of Mankote sector.
“Pakistan army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics and mortars from 0534 hours in Poonch sector along the Line of Control (LoC). Indian army retaliated strongly and effectively,” a defence spokesman said.
According to official sources, Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked firing targetting around 8 forward Indian villages and 14 border posts on the Line of Control in Mendhar and Balnoi-Mankotre sectors of Poonch district at around 6.00 AM.
The border villages which were in the range of heavy Pak shelling included Golhad upper, Golhad, Malikpur Top, Dharana upper, Lanjiote, Patri, Chhajla and Basooni Top. Fourteen forward Indian posts targetted by Pak troops of 640 Mujahid and 641 Mujahid included Helmet, Tibba, Tilla, gunhill, gyan, Anand, Bala, Chapti, Sona Gali, Patri Gali, 483, 484, 485 and 81 under the domination of 15 Mahar and 20 Kumaon in Mankote-Balnoi sector and 21 Punjan in Mendhar sectors.
The heavy Pakistan shelling, which created fear and trepidation among the border residents of these villages, also took a toll of two oxen belonging to one Haji Mohammed Ahmed son of Ali Akbar of Chhajla Patri in Mankote.
Pakistan violated the ceasefire four times on August 13 by firing and shelling in Krishnagati, Nowshera and Mankote, resulting in injuries to three jawans.
On August 12, Pakistani troops heavily fired on forward posts and civilian areas in Krishnagati and Poonch sectors in which a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and a woman were killed.
A Pakistani army shell exploded near a house killing 40-year-old Raqia Bi of Gohlad Kalran on August 12. Naib Subedar Jagram Singh Tomar was also killed in Pakistani firing in Krishnagati sector on August 12.
On August 8, Pakistani troops shelled Krishnagati sector of Poonch district, in which sepoy Pawan Singh Sugra was grievously injured and later succumbed to injuries.
On August 7, an army jawan was injured in a ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops along the LoC in Uri sector of Baramulla district.
On August 6, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire by firing at Indian posts along the LoC in Baba Khori area of Rajouri district of Jammu. 2017 has seen a sharp increase in ceasefire violations by Pakistan.
