Youth clash with security forces during searches

KULGAM, Sep 12: Security forces on Tuesday resorted to aerial firing and tear-smoke shelling during a cordon and search operation launched by them in Tarigam village of southern Kulgam district where two Hizb militants were killed in the week hours on Monday in a brief gunfight.

Local sources said that the forces including army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of police after being informed about the presence of militants in the area laid a siege to the village at around 6 PM. As soon as the forces, local sources said, advanced for searches, scores of local youth and took to streets and clashed with them in an attempt to disrupt the anti-militancy operation.

The youth, they said, attacked the forces who were part of operation with stones and rocks who in order to drive them back resorted to tear-smoke shelling and aerial firing. The forces despite despite stiff resistance by the youth carried out search operation in a particular locality but did not find anything.

SP Kulgam, Shridhar Patil, said that the operation was called off only after was no contact with the militants. "We conducted search operation in a target area despite clashes but after we did not find anything, the operation was called off," SP said.

In Shahabad village of another southern district Pulwama, cordon and search operation was launched in the late afternoon by government forces following an input about the presence of militants.

Local sources said that the security forces carried out house to house searches in a particular locality to locate the militants who were believed to be hiding there. However, the operation was called off unsuccessfully after no contact was established with the militants.
