KULGAM, Sep 12: Shutdown was observed in southern Kulgam district for the second direct day on Tuesday over the killing of two local militants.
Two local Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants identified as Sayar Ahmad Wani and Dawood Illahi were killed in a brief encounter on Sunday night while they were coming out of a local private school where they had taken shelter. Amid a complete shutdown, thousands of people had turned up at their funeral prayers in their native villages.
To mourn the killings a complete shutdown was observed in Kulgam, Quimoo, Khudwani, Yaripora and DH Pora areas of the district for the second running day today with shops, educational institutions and private offices remaining closed and traffic off the roads.
Meanwhile the condition of the mother of one of the slain militant Dawood Illahi who had suffered brain hemorrhage after hearing the news of her son having been killed continued to be critical. She is being treated at SMHS hospital Srinagar where she had been referred to by the doctors from district hospital Anantnag.
Dawood, according to reports, was killed soon after meeting his mother. Dawood pertinently had joined militant ranks soon after being released from the jail after four years on charges of killing a Sarpanch. His two other friends, who had also been jailed for years in connection with the killing of the Sarpanch and had picked up gun after their release, were killed earlier this year.
