Clashes at Pahoo
Protests after braid chopping incidents at several places
SRINAGAR, Oct 8: A number of braid chopping incidents were reported from some parts of the Valley leading to protest. Clashes occurred between protestors, police and security forces at Pahoo in Pulwama during which cops resorted to tear gassing and lathi-charge.

The clashes at Pahoo occurred when people said that a braid chopping attempt was foiled. The people caught hold of a person, whom they accused of being a braid chopper. When the police reached the spot, it came under stone pelting.

The police and paramilitary military forces burst smoke shells and resorted to lathi-charge. The protestors pelted stones. Reinforcement of cops was summoned to bring the situation under control. The clashes continued for some time. Police later detained the person, who was caught by people, and started investigations in the case.

Reports from Khrew in Pampore said that the braid of a woman was allegedly chopped. The woman’s husband said that she was going to a baker’s shop to get bread. “As she moved out the gate of her house, two unidentified persons caught hold of her, sprayed some chemicals on her face and cut her braid. I came out and saw her lying on ground,” he said.

The incident led to protest in the area. A shutdown was also observed in the area and adjoining areas against the incident. Shops, which usually remain open on Sundays were closed. Transport was also off the roads.

Reports said that braid of a woman was allegedly chopped at Firdousabad in Batamaloo. The unidentified persons also allegedly stole some golden ornaments from the house. The local held protest against it.

Another incident of braid chopping was received from Wachi in south Kashmir.

The increasing incidents of braid chopping are causing panic among the women.
