"More than braid chopping incidents, it were the rumours that have created scare. There have been rumours about braid chopping incidents in several localities and residential areas. However such rumours have been ultimately proved wrong. Therefore, people should not believe any person unless it is confirmed by police," a senior police official revealed.

Across south Kashmir, from where majority of incidents of braid chopping and attempts of braid chopping have been reported, the locals from several areas revealed that almost every other day they would hear false rumours regarding hair chopping.

There was not even any attempt of hair chopping on her. There have been lots of rumours about braid choppers reaching out to different localities creating fear among girls. However, it has all turned into false rumours," residents from Bijbehara area said.

To thwart the spread of rumours the authorities have snapped mobile internet services in South and other parts of Kashmir several times. On Friday the mobile internet service in Kashmir valley was snapped for hours together to stop the spread of false rumours vis-a-vis braid chopping.
